Advanced data recovery features are those that may not be used for every task, but are nevertheless essential to a professional data recovery technician’s toolset. These are features that you won’t see in do-it-yourself data recovery software and are almost strictly utilized by trained data recovery professionals.
S.M.A.R.T. which stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, is a widely-used technology in hard drives and solid-state devices that monitors their various conditions that serve as indicators for drive reliability with the goal of predicting hardware failures. It is crucial to be aware when disks are heavily damaged, since further read/write activity may cause further data loss.
Network Data Recovery
Product | Rating | Test Results | |
---|---|---|---|
R-Studio | 6.0 | Full-featured network data recovery. All data (recovered files, disk images, scan results, etc.) can be saved both on the local and remote computers. Network data recovery is becoming increasingly useful for technicians serving remote clients. R-Studio, Restorer Ultimate, and Stellar Phoenix Technician are the only programs with full-featured network data recovery capabilities. OnTrack® EasyRecovery™ Enterprise states that it supports network data recovery using VNC, but this is true for all data recovery programs. The network versions of R-Studio and Restorer Ultimate receive the highest ratings, as they can both be used over the Internet and can be used on an unbootable machine. Restorer Ultimate scores slightly lower than R-Studio because its recovery agent only supports Windows. |

DMDE | 0.0 | We could not find this feature in the program. | |
Only four of the nine tested products show the drive’s S.M.A.R.T. data. Although all programs with this feature are rated at 5 stars or higher, Restorer Ultimate gets a full 6 stars for its prominent pop-up window and warning message with a recommendation to create an image of the drive if it has bad S.M.A.R.T. data. This is in contrast to Stellar Phoenix, which has S.M.A.R.T. reporting features, but buries them in the Advanced Options tab. |

Stellar Phoenix Technician | 2.5 | Direct access to a virtual RAID. Only disks can be added to a virtual RAID. | |
Except for GetDataBack, all products tested support direct access to a virtual RAID and most of the products support adding disks and disk images to a virtual RAID. We couldn’t find an option to use disk images for RAID reconstruction in Stellar Phoenix Technician, which severely reduces its usefulness for professional RAID recovery. R-Studio has the most advanced set of RAID recovery parameters and is rated the highest in this category. |
For this rating, we evaluated each program’s support for a number of essential advanced data recovery features. These are features that may be infrequently used, or only used in business settings with more complex data storage configurations. Nevertheless, their inclusion with the standard data recovery features can vastly expand the level of service that a technician can offer.
